2008, Cartoonist Roundtable meetings will shift to the first Monday of
every month, NOT THE THIRD!!! Please excuse our dust, and we do

Due to construction that will soon be underway at MoCCA, there will be

archival illustrations for the dance mockumentary, The Bentfootes.

Well, the feature film will premiere at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade
Theater next weekend! All the details are below.

The Bentfootes the movie! A mockumentary melange of Spinal Tap and Ken
Burns, The Bentfootes is a loving skewering of 200 years of American
dance. Jim Raritan (James Urbaniak) attempts to memorialize a
quasi-illustrious family of dancers who managed to keep their demented
muse alive through two centuries of American history.

The BOX SOCIAL Underground Comics Exhibition at Secret Project Robot is opening this weekend. It is a celebratory convergence of comics creators who seek to produce interesting, experimental work regardless of the time, cost and lack of notoriety. Last month, Nina Kester, President of SVA's Cartoon Allies, a student-run cartoonists' advocacy organization, hosted a lovely evening of real-deal comic jamming. There was much socializing to be had as the participants drew panel after panel of some pretty fantastic, crazy stuff. Amazing what some Sharpies, some paper and some mingling can do.

The Arteries Group presents the *"Comics Thinktank"* panel with postmodern stylist R. Sikorak, artist/critic Calvin Reid, DC/Vertigo head Karen Berger, Harvard fellow Dr. Hillary Chute; special tentative guests: comics master Gene Colan and EC critic/historian John Benson. Moderator: James Romberger.

6:30-8:00pm on September 6th at Rapture Cafe, 200 Avenue A (between 12thand 13th Streets).

The purpose of the panel is to hash out some of the potentials of comics as art and literature. Comics' status in the Art World has been improving but there are still nostalgic and "High-Low" attitudes that seem to preclude objective curation and criticism. The current positive critical attention paid comics and graphic novels is often misguided, in that literary reviewers tend to analyze the text, but without understanding the relative value of the art in storytelling. Still, if graphic novels are going to be the savior of the book trade as has been claimed, we had better have more literate comics.
